With its fiddle and accordion, "Paper In Fire" announces the change in Mellencamp's sound that appears throughout The Lonesome Jubilee, as he and his band began accenting their brand of rock with rootsy instrumentation. The song also touches on elements of the bible, the 1963 Paul Newman film Hud, and the rock-and-roll lifestyle. Mellencamp's uncle Joe, who died from cancer while The Lonesome Jubilee was being recorded, inspired "Paper In Fire."
